Old Hairy Guy Completes P90X and lives!!!!

Well, technically, I have one more work out left, but here are the side by sides for you.

My stats:

Started at 178 lbs and ended at 166 lbs. Was at 27% Body fat, now 18%. It doesn't sound like much, but I really look different in person (especially naked wink-wink). I will be doing this again, but will rework the diet plan a bit.

Anyway, here you go! (please disregard the fuzzy pics, apparently the Hubbie can't be bothered you use both hands and actually focus when taking a picture - probably because he is on a far more important phone call)....

Mmmmmmmmm!

Oscar's Auntie K came over and made a pizza for us. We then watched a scary movie!

She started with a can of the store bought Pilsbury pizza dough. We mixed Riccota cheese and garlic for the "sauce" and then layered every possible vegetable (even thin sliced potato's). We added a thin layer of different cheeses between veggie layers. We baked for 18 minutes ate 400.......

Snickers Cheese Cake and Week-end with Predo!

Well, of course, the most important item in that title is Snickers Cheesecake! Here is a sample of the completed item before I give you the recipe!! By the way, this is my first time ever making a cheese cake!

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! Just an awful cheesecake! LOL..

I know what you are thinking! "But Predo, you are just days away from completing the full P90x, WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU THINKING!!!"

Well, the cheese cake was made for some friends. Half for my work, and half for the Hubbies! We are just bringing some summer love to work!!!

So here is the recipe:

One glass of wine or cocktail (to start).

Collect the following ingredients:

30 (or so) original OREO cookies

10 tbsp unsalted butter

2 tbsp water

24 oz cream cheese, softened

2 large eggs

1 (8oz) container sour cream

1 cup sugar

6 (2.07 oz) Snicker bars chopped

3 cups semisweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup heavy cream

There are three steps to this process, so enjoy the wine/cocktail through out and ensure refills are available when necessary.

Crust:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Wrap the bottom and outside of a 10" spring form pan with foil. Chop the cookies, with the filling, until fine crumbs. Add 6 tbsp butter and 2 tbsp water. Mix until blended and crumbs are moist. Press the crumbs over bottom and halfway up the sides of the prepared pan. (I actually used the entire package of cookies, and increased the butter by 2 tbsp in order to have a thicker crust).

Filling:

In a large bowl, beat cream cheese until light and fluffy. Add in eggs, one at a time, scraping down the sides of the bowl occasionally. Beat in sour cream and sugar. Stir or fold in 5 of the Snickers bars (chopped) and 1 cup of the chocolate chips. Scrape into crust and place pan on baking sheet. Bake at 375 for 60 to 70 minutes until top is golden and puffed. Let cool on rack. Cover and refrigerate at least 6 hours until firm.

Cheesecake after baking for 61 minutes

Now take your drink and relax. I have provided two examples of how this is done.

Glaze:

After cheesecake has chilled for at least 6 hours (mine was overnight), use a knife to loosen the edges and remove the pan. Spread the sixth chopped Snickers bar on the top of the cheesecake and prepare the glaze. (side note, because I had extra chips, I also placed them on top). You may also want to place the candy-bar on top of the glaze, this is totally your option.

Place 2 cups of chocolate chips, the heavy cream and 4 tbsp of butter into microwave safe bowl (I used a large glass measure cup in order to have a pour spout). Heat on high in microwave for 1 minute. Stir, and microwave for another 30 seconds and stir again. Stir until smooth and shiny. Let cool, just slightly until think enough to pour and drizzle. Pour the melted chocolate around the edges first in order to have a slight drizzle down the sides, then pour over center of cake.

Now that I have finished 8 weeks, here are my starting pix....

Here I am at the heaviest I have ever been. 178 pounds, and too soft. Now, with two months under my belt, I am down to 171 pounds, but have firmed up completely. Everything is moving into the right places, and I am in the best shape of my life!

It took some effort, but I have to admit, P90x is working so far!!! I am already planning to cycle through it again, just for muscle growth.....

Week four comes to a close!

Yes, I am still alive, and still doing the P90x.....

I am now done with the four week point for the P90X, and the changes are showing. I have only lost 3 pounds so far, but I am down a pant size, and feel everything tightening up. My muscle definition is becoming more obvious, and my core strength is noticeably increased. This is paying off so far!

Now, my confusion is with the calorie counts. The food calculation reflects that I should have about 2700 calories per day as a minimum, but with the food choices given for the serving counts (and being a vegetarian for 24 years) don’t allow me to get that many calories. I know I should limit calories to lose weight, but need calories to gain muscle. So, how do I lose weight and gain muscle? Funny question right? Yes, it seems to be.

After reviewing calorie needs from 10 different web sites (including P90X and The Mayo Clinic), I have been given 10 completely different figures based on the same input information. So, needless to say, my confusion has just been multiplied by 10!!!!

So, unless anyone of you out there can help clarify my slightly dazed and confused vision of how it should be for a vegetarian on a diet, I will simply plug along as is and see what happens. The worse case is I learn from my mistakes and push through the P90X again, which would not be a bad thing at all!

Now, on to week five, and double workouts!!!

Next time we meet, I may be in traction.....

I have now completed week one of the P90x. I was in pretty good shape before, but this kicked my butt! I begin week two now, and the intensity gets tougher. I can't wait to see results that are more then just a very sore body!!!

Any way, at this point, I have actually gained 2 pounds. Having said that, in just one week, my body is feeling stronger. Sore, but stronger. The exercises have been entertaining and intense, but not to difficult. A good routine. I will keep you informed of the payoff as I go along!

Do me a favor. Do yourself a favor. Do man/woman kind a favor. Let us all be nice.

Starting today, try to do one additional thing nice. Say "Hello". Offer assistance to someone in need. Pay attention to someone who needs it. Put a flower on a co-workers desk, just for fun. Take your neighbor a cookie. Give the person who delivers your mail a piece of candy. Tell the bus driver you appreciate what they do. Open your heart to others around you. Tell some one special how much you love them. Smile, say "Thank You", wave, wink and giggle, and for goodness sake, HUG!!!!

If we take very small steps, and just be nice, then even our differences become smaller. Look at your fellow members of the Human Species and find at least one good quality. Find the positive spin in everything! Be Happy, and pass it along like it is a drug.

When I see people, I do not see Democrats or Republicans or Tea Party members or even skin color. I see people. I see people who deserve a smile, or a hug or at the very least a respectful glance to let them know they are seen and have value. We have this bigger brain, these opposable thumbs and a heart. Lets start using them for positive affirmation instead of fear and destruction.

I see you, I hear you, and I read you. You are worthy, and I value you. Please accept these words as a great big "Gosh I Love You" Hug from the heart.

Now go out there and pass it on!!!!

So, the very first image that fueled my desire to ride the open roads on two wheels with a mass of power between my legs was the album cover from Bat out of Hell by Meatloaf (yes, yes, I am very, very old, I get it.....) Now this comes as no surprise for those of you that know me. I operate by a set of ideals celebrating freedom, nonconformity to mainstream culture, and loyalty to the Jack-a-lope.

A little Sunday flashback...

Grandpa

Yesterday, they found Grandpa, incoherent, sitting in his underwear in a house at 65 degrees with blood on his face, arms and legs. He was asked how many kids he had and he said "Potosi", (thats the town he lives in).

After a very long night, we now know he has blood in his urine and blood on his brain. No idea what caused all this as of yet. Possibly a stroke.

I did talk to him tonight. In a very slurred voice, he told me some jokes, and snapped back his same old quick wit so that I know he is back as the Grandpa I know and Love. We now take things day by day, but today at least is a good day.

He gets to go home tomorrow, and we will figure out the path from there. I am not sure he will be able to ever care for himself again, but we are all going to make sure he gets to live and die in his own home.

Anyway, being so far away, and not knowing what was happening, I had a drink and a bath last night to think about what to do. While in the tub, my random play put on the perfect song for the moment written by Eddie from Pearl Jam. "The Man of the Hour". The reference to "Father" is truly fitting, as he is so much more my Father then he is my Grandfather.

I feel that this is just goodbye for now.

Grandpa is still with us, and hopefully will be for awhile. It is just that these kinds of things have been happening so often now that I think the time is soon to come. Today, the doctors asked if he had a living will. They made it clear that preparations should be made.

I love you Grandpa. I respect and worship you. I am so very proud to be your grandson. When the time comes, don't be afraid. Just take the wings that are waiting for you, and fly.

Saturday recipe for fun!!

I know I have been absent, but seriously I have been reading an insane amount of books. In fact, I have overwhelmed 6 different people (combined they can't seem to keep up, like they have a life or something.....)

Anyway, I am doing very well. The sun is out, I wake every morning with the love of my life, and I am surrounded but the most wonderful friends anyone could hope for.

So today, the Hubby and I spent some time in the kitchen making a very simple yet scrumptious little treat!! (And yes Lil' Deb, we did have our Jammies on the entire time!!!). See, I had just finished yet another book, and was in the office looking for the next one, when my eye was caught. Remember the family cook book that was put together after the passing of my Grandma? Well, I have decided to walk through a revival of sorts. I have already made the two favorite cookie recipes from Grandma, and then proceeded to eat each batch entirely!

So, today was a first time treat with this one, and we were not disappointed! I give this a 1 on the easy scale, a 1 on cost of ingredients scale, and a 5 on the happy taste scale!!! (this is of course on a scale of 1 to 5). Oh, and if there are children involved, even more fun!! Here you go, family recipe for Saturdays......

Puppy Chow

9 cups Chex or Crispix type Cereal

1 cup Chocolate chips, semi sweet (you do know I used the entire bag.....one can never have to much chocolate!)

1/2 cup Creamy Peanut Butter

1/4 cup Butter or Margarine

1 tsp vanilla

1 and 1/2 cups powdered Sugar

Measure cereal into large bowl and set aside. Microwave chocolate chips, peanut butter and margarine in a 1 quart microwaveable bowl for one minute uncovered. Stir, microwave another 30 seconds or until the mixture can be stirred smooth. Add vanilla and stir. Pour this mixture over the cereal and toss until evenly coated. Pour into a large plastic food storage bag, add powdered sugar and seal bag. Shake until well coated. Spread on wax paper until cooled. Store in an airtight container.

Taking Chance

Taking Chance is a wonderful movie we watched last Saturday evening. Auntie K, Hubbie and myself all had our moments of blubbering and sniffing, and through the entire film felt pride and honor. This movie is a must see!

It has Kevin Bacon in it, and along with the cast, it is one of the best acted movies I have seen in a long time. You feel you are outside looking in, and it makes one feel very good at the actions of many wonderful Americans with heart. As a veteran, I give my complete approval!

Again, this is a must see....

Allow yourself to relax and have fun.

Take deep meaningful breathes, and smile.

Reward yourself for being you.

Lil Deb and The Colonel...

So, as some of you know, I recently was hired for a real job. Since I have been "temping" for a while (actually, a long ass time!), I wanted to do a couple things before my first day at the new job. I gave notice at my temp job, and was let go early and had a few days off before starting my new position on the 21st.

With quick work, The Hubbie and I made the plans to see as many people as possible in this time frame, as I may not get any time off for the next year or so. Lil Deb and The Colonel topped the list......

Hubbie took two days off from his work, and we let Lil Deb in on the plans. After running around screaming in fits of excitement, she calmly said "I have so much to do!". Shortly after that phone call, she began her prep work for the overnight excursion we were taking to her house. You see, instead of simply riding the vacume around the house and calling it good, Lil Deb had to gut the entire house, clean every inch inside, and then clean every item as it came back into the house! I would classify it as "Spring Cleaning gone Wild!"....Anyway, there really was no reason what so ever for this mad rush of frenzied domestic upheaval, as her home is always in perfect order anyway (no matter when)!!!

So, the night before, we packed early, ate supper early, and went to bed early. It was like Christmas. We thought the sooner we go to sleep, the sooner it will be time to head out on our trip! Well, that just didn't seem to work. See, Oscar had seen the bags we packed, as well as the new toy we put in his overnight bag, and simply could not sleep. After about a million trips outside with him, and telling him over and over we would leave in the morning, he finally fell asleep.

5:00 am. Hubbie deep in the morning crossword, I packed the truck, took Oscar for his walk, and ran through the inventory to ensure we were on track. At 6:20 am we were on our way! Just four hours from our destination, and the excitement was peaking!!

It is an amazing drive. The surroundings move from lush Northwest Rainforest, to rocky crests and water falls, to the windy river and eventually desert landscape. Every color of the rainbow is represented, and the beauty of nature is overwhelming. We even saw the windmills that are slowly being placed to change our power use to something more eco-friendly.

As wonderful as the drive was, it was best when The Colonel gave us directions via the phone to get to their house! We arrived to open, loving, welcoming arms (as usual)! Of course, the yard and the house were immaculate, but the most wonderful thing was their home. The Hubbie and I walked in, and we were instantly comfortable. You know what I mean, it isn't just a house, it is a home, and a wonderful one at that.

We poured our first cocktail of the day, and relaxed in the back yard playing "catch up" with our stories. After laughter galore, and maybe just one more cocktail, we started investigating some of the treasures that Lil Deb and The Colonel have in their home. From money printed before George Washington, to safes probably used in the "Wild, Wild West", to Indian grass and even chop stick holders. We even got an impromptu slide show from when The Colonel was just a little ol' LT in that skirmish over there in Vietnam!

They are my most favorite two people to spend time with. They have the kind of lives that are story book fascinating! I simply began walking around, pointing at items in their collections, and was given the tale of it's being as well as how it came to be a part of their lives. I was in heaven!!!! We even took a little tour of the town, which of course had to include a stop at the very best french fry place in the county! (I am not sure why, but when Lil Deb and I get together, there is always fried foods and cheese......Hmmmm..).

They live in this delightful little town! The yards, the sidewalks, the parking lots, and even the streets were all clean. Everything was wonderful. It was like being in Mayberry! Everyone there was friendly, and everything was so quiet! I think one day I could move there...

After hours of chatter, laughter and wondering through their little museum, we had supper. Of course we ate far too much, and of course The Hubbie then started to fade. The drive, the excitement, the good food, the good friends and the good drink all took their toll. Off we went to get a little shut eye.

The next morning we had breakfast at a "Hotel Buffet" which of course was just like any other hotel buffet. We chattered back and forth, and picked up where we had left off the night before, just in time to have to leave to head home.

I always find it sad to leave good friends. The thing I try to focus on is how much I love them, and how wonderful they are. I know that does not make leaving them any easier, but it does help me to know they are just a phone call away. So, to my wonderful, fabulous Lil Deb and The Colonel - Thank you for a wonderful (yet short) trip, and Thank You for being you! The Hubbie and I love you both so incredibly much that we could not imagine having to endure life without you!!! Big Hugs to you two!!!

SSG and Special K caught on film.....

Yes dear readers! I have caught the illustrious SSG and Special K on film. It is Saturday, and after minutes of sitting in the parking lot of the nail salon, I caught them "pink" handed. Of course, Peter Frampton was on the radio, so I had to listen to the complete "Do you fell like we do". I crept out of my camo-mini-cooper, slunk behind some bushes and awaited the arrival. Special K was first, I met her at her vehicle door, and in a state of shock she saw me. She ran into the salon screaming "PAPARATSY, PAPARATSY" while covering he head with a nice angora throw she just happened to have laying around. Then SSG arrived, prepared as usual. Her limo pulled up, and the driver (dressed scantily, in some mock fireman uniform) opened the door. Just as SSG was about to step out, I was clubbed from behind, with a pigeon, by some small asian woman. I fought hard before the eighty-something, kung-fu wielding, one legged woman knocked me down for the count!

Above, is SSG sporting the color for spring. This lavender/pink mix is quite impressive, if only the black light drying machine would let me get a clear look at the tone that will certainly set teen-age hearts all a flutter in a rage to get themselves the exact same brand!

Special K of course, went awe natural as she has to break bricks in karate class and did not want to worry of chips in the polish. Plus, she doesn't want to be all "flashy" like those people out at Walmart! But listen Ladies, what ever the reason, natural french tip is always a true classic, and should be worn at least 8 weeks out of the year.

After the nail salon, it was a quick trip for Thai food for these two fashion plates. They dined on noodles and rice in the secluded "Members Only" section, where I was not allowed to take photo's. The food however, was lover-ly!!!

After lunch, SSG tried to escape me on the road, but I was too quick for her and caught the above photo at the stop light. Yes, it is true....An actual SSG sighting!!!!!! Calm down now, there is no charge, everyone is free to examine!!!!

I continued to follow SSG and was led to the most secretive find to date. I am afraid I have to tell you, that among us lives a group so devious, so sneaky, so secretive that even the FBI knows little of them. I have no other way then to just spit it out. Prepare yourself, here it is. You see, among our kind lives....knitters! RUN, SAVE YOURSELF, WOMEN AND CHILDREN AFTER ME!!!!

Just kidding....SSG is now developing a scientific knitting process that will change the face of the planet (as long as what ever she is knitting is flat and rectangular with no seams or counting).

Sound odd? Yes, indeed it does, but let me explain.

Did you know, that there are virgin women out there, advertising on the internet to sell their virginity? Well, it is true.

Now don't get me wrong, have at it! I mean something as special as one's virginity is there own virtue to deal with, sell, give away, what have you, but I have one issue. See, some men don't see the worth of a $3.00 cup of coffee, yet they will bid on a "virgin"? Seriously? Now, I am quite aware of "the power of the penis" and what that power does to the brain, but lets think for a moment.

I would agree with the sale of virginity whole heartedly if the following were required and at "the penis's" expense, above and beyond the actual bid price.

1) No dinner and a movie. I suggest a background check, blood test and 9 references.
2) A period of "courting" for at least three months must take place, with at least two face to face occasions per week.
3) Under no circumstances is "the penis" to ever touch the vagina with out the safe guard of a condom.
4) "The Penis" must of course be un-wed, and meet "The vagina's" parents.
5) The funds for the transaction must be cleared and accepted prior to de-flowering.
6) This is the most important, we know that "The Penis" has expectations, but when it comes to a virgin with no experience, you get what you get. On that same note, I suggest "the virgin" have expectations in writing, and if "the penis" does not fulfill those, then "the penis" will pay for college, a car, and maybe "the vagina's" first home

Sunday Breakfast...

On Sunday, Kyle and I and some friends had Breakfast with the fabulous, and famous SSG! She is doing well, and is as HOT as ever!!! I think the waiter was hitting on her, as he had to bring her food completely separate from the rest of us, and I swear I caught him checking out if his ass looked good in the mirror. We dined and chatted, the whole time, the entire restaurant was whispering about who SSG was, but of course that was to be expected, what with the Jackie O sun glasses and all......

When the reporters started flocking at the door, I whisked her away through the back door. She survived unscathed and un-photographed (if that is a word, who knows.....) Regardless, I am now thinking of devoting my life to being her head of security at the compound within which we shall ALL live!

Just a point of note, if you are living with us at the compound, it is a requirement that you tell me every single day, no scratch that, you tell me every single time you see me, that my pants make my ass look fabulous!!!! I am not in need of support for my own esteem, it is just that I have to compete with SSG!!!

So, FANTASTIC RECIPE.....

Butternut squash and apple soup! (really, you will love it, I swear!!!)

Ingredients
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons good olive oil
4 cups chopped yellow onions (3 large)
2 tablespoons mild curry powder
5 pounds butternut squash (2 large) (I actually roasted mine - cut in half, lay cut side down and bake at 350 for 40 min...)
1 1/2 pounds sweet apples, such as McIntosh (4 apples)
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 cups water
1 cups good apple cider or juice
Directions
Warm the butter, olive oil, onions, and curry powder in a large stockpot uncovered over low heat for 15 to 20 minutes, until the onions are tender. Stir occasionally, scraping the bottom of the pot.

Peel the squash, cut in half, and remove the seeds. Cut the squash into chunks. Peel, quarter, and core the apples. Cut into chunks.

Add the squash, apples, salt, pepper, and 2 cups of water to the pot. Bring to a boil, cover, and cook over low heat for 30 to 40 minutes, until the squash and apples are very soft. Process the soup through a food mill fitted with a large blade, or puree it coarsely in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a steel blade.

Pour the soup back into the pot. Add the apple cider or juice and enough water to make the soup the consistency you like; it should be slightly sweet and quite thick. Check the salt and pepper and serve hot.

Our friend "Lil Deb" has expressed a concern to me that I find very odd. She stated that there was a six year old boy, who used his finger as a pretend gun and said "pew, pew" as if making the shooting noise. She stated this child was expelled due to a "zero tolerance" rule, and his mother is at wits end with what to do.........

In this day and age, with the gigantic drop out rate of high-school age young adults, war on television and passing out condoms to kindergardeners, something must be done. We must vanquish this type of imaginary behavior. I suggest we do the following:

1) Place this child on the terrorist watch list.
2) Place this child on the "Do not fly" list.
3) Castrate this child immediately.
4) Place this incident on the child's permanent record, thus preventing him from ever obtaining a job or contributing to society.
5) Blame the President for this child's actions, and scream in our "outdoor" voice that the sky is falling and run around in circles....

Please God, I know you receive a lot of prayers for cheaper beer, and a better year for NASCAR, but please take a look at this for me. I made imaginary guns with my fingers, and even made the "bang" sound with my highly technical vocal skills as a child, yet I graduated from school and did not destroy even my "G.I. Joe action figures"..... Non of my imaginary friends robbed banks, non of my stuffed animals ever pimped each other out, all my rehearsal time for a possible slot with the Village People never transpired into a real job and certainly non of my pets created an atomic bomb, so what has changed? Are we, as a society, blaming a six year old child for our own flaws? Is this six year old child to blame for drugs, war, gangs, incest, and molesting Priests? Really? Maybe we should all take a step back, take a big deep breathe, pull our heads out of our asses and hug the kid while telling him he could some day be president. I mean really, It worked for the Bushes, right??

Okay, so the other day at work I found a flaw with the process the company on the whole was practicing. The details are not important, but the powers that be credited the issue to "Kyle" instead of me. So, basically, my name was not important enough to remember even though it was on the email address and the signature line. What ever the case, this mythical "Kyle" got the credit for a job well done which left my supervisor and direct managers completely baffled.

I, in turn, as is my usual tendency, let this slide for the betterment of humanity. "What?" you say? Let me describe....

So, basically, my efforts receive all due attention, but under the wrong name. Why would it matter? Let us say for a moment that I pointed out the error that occurred by the powers that be. These god-like managers that write the path of financial institutions would simply equate my situation as finger pointing and never allow me to move forward, yes, but if left alone, I have ultimate power! "How?" you might ask. Well, now I actually have the ultimate power by simply saying "Kyle did it!" or "Kyle said it!" or "By the power of Kyle, I command you!".....Get the picture?

So, for now, I am plotting a "Kyle" take over. Kyle is going to write a "Kyle says" collection of proverbs (not unlike Confucius....) This is where I need your help......Please, by all means, send everything possible for this worldly document in order to publish and become filthy rich so that we can not only obtain a pool, but a pool boy as well (and possibly a bar tender!!!)!

Portland gay couple, survivors of Vietnam War, now find peace.

That is the title of an article on the front page of "The Oregonian" today.

I know very well who these two people are, Tom Norton and Bao Nguyen. I read this article in the paper this morning, and then online looked up "The Oregonian" and then typed in the search bar for Tom Norton. My Hubbie has been friends with Tom forever, and the man truly is a silent hero. Boa is cut from the same cloth, and to be in a room with them together is to see greatness.

After reading the online comments, there were some of the most heartfelt and sincere responses one could hope for, but unfortunately some of the most bitter.

To Tom and Boa, it has always been, and will always be an honor for me to be in your presence. The histories each of you have endured are horrific at best, and yet you are two of the sweetest, most amazing individuals I have ever known. It is a wonderful gift to know you.

Most of my readers have a strong understanding of the strength and courage it takes to join the military as a homosexual, especially when it requires war time participation. I have lived it, I have been there, and I would not wish it on anyone. Having said that, my time in the military was a child at the playground compared to Tom's. He saved peoples lives by putting his own at risk, and in return he is belittled and degraded by pathetic fucking idiots who have not a clue the cost of freedom. My deepest respect will always be with Tom and his sacrifices, but my respect for the citizens of the country we both fought for is very much at risk.

I find it disturbing that in todays situation, of americans coming home in body- bags, in pieces, or in just plain empty shells of what they once were, that our society still is able to spit such distain without even the slightest second thought. Gay, straight, male, female, black, white or even purple, I don't care what the label, a veteran has paid the fee to be worthy of respect, period.

I am proud to have served in the footsteps of greatness. Your sacrifices, Tom, are not unnoticed.

Grandpa and Oscar..

I spoke to Grandpa this morning, and he is in good spirits! I have been talking to the nursing staff in ICU, and they think Grandpa is a "hoot"! Every time I called, he was sleeping so it wasn't until this morning that we actually connected.

He has quite a large ulcer, that is bleed into his digestive tract. They have given him five full units of blood, but if he eats are drinks, he starts to bleed again. The are testing right now to see his blood levels for possible surgery. Grandpa said "I think I am about a quart low"!

In any case, they are going to try microscopic surgery first, going down the throat in an effort to not have to cut him open. If that doesn't work, they may have to do go in through his abdomen. I asked Grandpa if he was worried about a scar on his bikini line and he said "I don't want to think about it because it will probably ruin my shot as a centerfold in Playgirl"!

My Aunt "P" took her husband to the Ice Hotel in Canada for the week-end, and Grandpa thinks that is the greatest thing ever! When she returns on Monday, he wants to hear all about it!

And to make matters more stressful....

Oscar has pancreatitis. This morning we go for the third trip to the vet in as many days. We have to pick him up to move him as he wants nothing to do with walking. He is in a lot of pain, but we are giving him some pain killers and he is sleeping a lot. He won't drink water, so we have to force it with a syringe. He does eat, little bits at a time though, so that is good. So, today is lay in bed and cuddle with Oscar day. The Hubby is going out of his mind, not from worry, but because he feels so helpless.

Anyway, I am sure all things will get better soon, and that we are over the hump of the worst for both Grandpa and Oscar. Now, I am going to go upstairs and suck down a bottle of Gin, because they say these things come in threes, and I am just not ready for any more shit to hit the fan.......

Yesterday Grandpa asked to be taken to the Hospital, and everyone thought it was because he has been sick for a few days. They took him right away to the emergency room, and he has internal bleeding. Last night at about 8pm midwest time he underwent a bunch of "-oscopy" procedures to find the bleeding. Grandpa did not want any phone calls, and just wanted to sleep. Today I called and he has been moved to I.C.U. but I do not yet know what the full story is. He is sleeping and I did not want to disturb him, and his Nurse is on rounds. No update yet, but I have to say, it sounds like he is in good hands. The staff I have spoken too think he is "just wonderful" and "full of jokes"........

What ever the case, I will keep you informed as I find out more...

On another note, I am set for interview number 4 tomorrow morning.

Grandpa

I was talking to Grandpa Sunday night. I find that in our conversations, he tells me the same things as he did in the last call, and every once in a while he says something new. I don't mind hearing the same things over and over at all, in fact, I am quite happy that he remembers so much. I think it is just his short term memories that are a little foggy. I also find in our conversations, that we are getting to know each other very well. In the past, we had a pretty good relationship, but one with no real depth. Lately though, we are both becoming more open, more honest, more true. It is hard for me to explain, but I think that I have come to realize that he actually sees me for who I am. He accepts me as a grown man, with values and opinions that are not exactly like his. I say this to explain something further about our relationship, not really to point out some personal revelation. My point is, that I think he looks to me as someone different then family, but still family. Still trustworthy, still forgiving, still understanding, still blood.

Let me digress. My family is built of like minds. Generation, after generation following the lines of life that their parents did before them. I, on the other hand, like my Aunt P, have walked a different path. Flashbacks in my mind constantly remind me of the labels for the two of us. "Black-Sheep", "Modern-Thinker", and "Going against the grain". I used to think these labels were derogatory, but now, I am grateful. I think Grandpa thinks I will understand and accept things he doesn't normally talk about, like feelings for example.

You see, now that time has elapsed, and my Aunt and I have built these completely different lives, we are now somehow respected. I am very thankful, of course, but still, how weird is that? Like out of the blue "Bam" you are actually okay!!! Weird.

Any-way....Grandpa has told me several times that he is so proud of me. That in and of itself is amazingly fulfilling, but Sunday's call opened a whole different perspective. It was the normal call. "How's Jimmy?", "How's Lil Deb?", "You did good son, those two are good people". (For those of you not in the know, "Good People" is a very nice compliment.) Then Grandpa broke into something a little different. He started talking to me, like I was an old friend. He talked about things that I never heard him talk about before. He started talking to me about his past, proud things, not so proud things, painful things, happy things.....

The point to all this rambling, is simple. I think Grandpa is sharing things with me because he is filling in the missing chapters, with real, down to earth facts about who he is. He is laying it out on the line so that I know first hand his history. Like I am worthy of his story. He is not trying to make up for lost time, but to define the value of his life. He said "I have lived a damn good life. I am so proud of all my kids, and amazed by their kids. I look back with a smile and can say it was all very, very worth it. I've had a great life!" He said these things, and I got it. He has stopped looking forward, and started looking back.

He is talking to me, like we wont have that many more conversations left......

He is talking to me, because he feels safe doing so. No judgement, no questions, no worry. He is sharing with me the one thing our family never shared, emotion.

Jimmy's Diet...

Well, lots of emails from Jimmy's pix came in asking how he did it. It was a plan designed by a doctor friend of ours, specifically for patients with high cholesterol, diabetes, smokers etc....

It is kind of like a modified Atkins deal, but more balanced. He is going to have a web sight up with in the next few weeks for you all to see, but for now is focusing on my Hubbie. Jimmy gets his blood work this week to see if he can cut down or off of Lipitor. He has already quit the Pepcid, tums, etc. He loves to cook, so learning the "new path" has been like a lab experiment.

I hope to get him down here to tell you about it, maybe give you some recipes and/or substitutes that worked for him. Who knows! Right now he is being all super shy. He said, "Oh my Gawd, look at my double chin! I still need to lose another 5 pounds! Eack!!!"

He is such a Silly Bunny! Right now he is doing his sit ups, and Oscar (the dog) thinks this is play time! I am going to go save Jimmy, and wrestle with Oscar!!!!!!

I have been dreaming...

Yes, it is true! The mear fact that I am sleeping long enough to reach REM is astounding enough, but non-the-less, I am dreaming.

These dreams are not reminiscent of soap operas, or even flashes of my earthly history. They are simply very vivid waves of color. All the colors of the universe, blending, bending, spiraling, flashing, holding and fading. Somewhat like the acid trip concerts of the 1960's. I never feel sad, or really happy, just peaceful. I am not sure what it means, if anything, but there are plenty of explanations to be found on the internet.

The search for "vivid colored dreams" yields a variety of definitions, with vast discussions, and no two seem to agree. I stopped searching when I found a link to Native American beliefs. It appears that historically, every tribe and even certain bands of tribes had their own thoughts on the meaning of dreams. Historically, each of these groups were held together with two specific threads in their belief structure. One, that the inner centre, The Self, or the guiding spirit of a person "is realized in an exceptionally pure, unspoilt form". Two, the more vivid, or colorful the "vision" or dream was, the more open the dream doorway was to a wider awareness. Now, what does this mean to me? I guess my dreams are calling for a staring roll in "The Technicolor Dreamcoat" or something! Who knows, I simply appreciate the depth and peacefulness they are bringing.....

This morning, I went to the book store. Not an unusual event for me, but this time, with no real direction in mind. No title, no author, no list of topics. Not even the thought of looking for dream definitions! I simply walked in, and looked for books that seemed somehow "vivid" to me. I walked around for a little bit completely focused, and then started to feel like I was being watched. As I turned down an aisle to look under fiction, I saw my spy. The book store harbors a renegade cat. All black, very tame and completely comfortable living in the bookstore. I had seen it before from outside, but was never able to find her inside on previous visits. This time, she sought me out.

I stood motionless at one end of the aisle, and she at the other. Then, after a brief moment she stuck her tail straight up, turned slowly, walked slightly away, and then looked back at me over her shoulder. "She wants you to go pick her up"! This from an older gentleman tending to the magazines on the wall. "She usually gets what she wants, so if you don't give her some attention, she will keep following you!" Trust me, I needed no one to tell me to go pet the cat, I was already on the move! I walked to the end of the aisle, and the cat turned to the left and jumped on the arm of a chair. I sat down, she crawled up on my chest and looked me straight in the eyes. She purred before I even started petting her, but never once did she stop looking me in the eyes.

After awhile, the same gentleman asked if there was something specific I was looking for. "Yes, something that I normally would never pick out myself" I told him. He smiled, patted the cat on the head and asked me the last book I read. "Shutter Island" I said. Of course I did not tell him that SSG referred me to the book back in September and I did not read it until last week-end! He looked up to the ceiling, then back at me and said, come with me.

I followed respectfully behind the clerk, and the cat in turn followed me. He handed me "The Given Day" (another novel by Dennis Lehane - author of Shutter Island...) and said this one is quit different from what I had just read. He also handed me, "The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein and "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson. I looked at him and asked what these were about, to which he replied "about getting something you would never pick for yourself! After you read them, come back and tell me if I chose wrong!"

As I was at the register, the cat was weaving in and out of my legs, purring and half mewing. I smiled down at her, just as an elderly woman entered the store. She had to be in her eighty's at least, with a plastic hair bonnet, clip purse and full length rain coat. She walked slow but firmly, and sat just to the right of the door to take off the bonnet. The cat, at full speed, raced over to her, leapt at least four feet from the Lady and landed gingerly on the arm of the chair. This cat then looked the Lady right in the eyes, pushed her head softly into the woman's chin, and the daintily curled up on her lap. I just love animals!!!

Two odd topics, I know, but somehow in my head they go together, or at least one after the other. I don't know, who does? Anyway, I am now going to make a few phone calls, then start reading a new book! I hope your day is turning out as peaceful and relaxing as mine is!!!

I've have been in seclusion for a bit. School was draining, difficult, and even a little tormenting, but I have maintained my "A". One more term of accounting to go, but I am taking this term off. With my soapbox politely tucked away under the bed, I am finding reflection a somewhat bitter pill.

I am almost 40. My career path has been destroyed in the economy, my bank account uncomfortably low, and my future possibilities slowly fading away. One would think I should be depressed, but I am not.

For the last couple weeks I have been seeing someone new, someone different, someone I have been missing without thinking about it. I am seeing myself, again. It is obvious that the stress of my previous jobs took more from me then just sleep and time, they took life as well. Throw the pressure of advanced paced classes on top of that, and there was little left for anything else. Today, however, I am relaxed.

I have been reading, spending time with my Hubbie, playing with Oscar the dog and Vera the cat. I am taking public transportation to work instead of driving. I listen to the news in the morning. I have even found time for music and personal reflection. Above all things, I have been able to have phone conversations, sometimes hours long with dear friends who are far away, and family with as well.

I have changed, yes, but how much, and for how long? Is this simply a period of catching up, just to put it all back on hold the next time? I can not answer just yet, but I have a plan.

A while back, my dear friend SSG physically wrestled me to the floor and twisted my nipples until I agreed to start a blog. I am grateful for that, because now I intend to go back and read through those posts. A study in history you might say, in an attempt to find out where my head was at. In this constructive time, I intend to come back to the blog with new items as well. Who knows, maybe the spiraling decline of the last two years was a wake up call before it's too late. We shall see!

"Well," said the rancher uncomfortably, "I really wanted to talk to your Dad. It's about your brother Howard getting my daughter, Suzie, pregnant."'

The boy considered for a moment. "You would have to talk to Pa about that," he finally conceded. "If it helps you any, I know that Pa charges $500 for the bull and $50 for the hog, but I really don't know how much he gets for Howard."

Everyone always got a good laugh from Grandpa's tales, and he made sure that he never put a name or singled anyone out that might get their feelings hurt. I should mention, his tales are not the cleanest ones, but he does pick on everyone, just to be fair. So, I intend to post of few of his stories, and up front as that no one feel offended. These are just simple, old time stories that he himself grew up on. Please enjoy them....

There was an old Zoo-keeper, who had gotten the pens all cleaned out and was relaxing outside in a chair. He noticed the Giraffe suddenly ran around the pen about three times, jumped over the fence and out he went across the lawn.

“Good God” thought the Zoo-keeper “He never did anything like that before, I wonder what happened?” He looked out, and all he could see was a little old grey haired lady, so he went over and said “Did you do something to that Giraffe that made he go all wild like that?”

“Not really”, she said. “He was just scratching his ass on that fence over there and his nuts just looked like pure velvet. I couldn’t help myself, I just reached through and I scratched them. He just went hog wild!

“Oh m God” he said as he dropped his drawers around his ankles. “Here, you better scratch mine, I gotta go catch that Son-of-a-bitch!”

This doctor decided that he had circumcised so many little boys that it would be kind of interesting to save the foreskins in alcohol. He had just row after row of bottles. He got a new nurse who wanted to throw all them away because it looked terrible!

“No” he said “I got a lot of memories from those”

She said “Maybe I could save them for you. I have a friend that’s a taxidermist. He might be able to make something out of it”

He waited a couple of weeks, and the old taxidermist called him to come pick up what was made.

He went up there, and the taxidermist handed him what looked like a little tiny tobacco sack.

The Doctor asked “Is this all you got out of all those foreskins?”

To which the taxidermist replied, “Yeah, but if you stroke it a few times, it turns into a briefcase!

This Fella came into a bar, and as he was walking in he says “Set me up 10 shots of whiskey! All right in a row, I’m gonna down ‘em all” The bartender started pouring them while all the patrons were looking at him. By God, he took one right after the other and downed them all! He set there for a few minutes, them fell off the barstool on his back. He wiggled around, got to his hands and knees and crawled into the can. He was in there a few minutes, and all at once there was a blood-curdling scream! The bartender rushed in and said “What’s all the screaming about?”

“Well” he said, “I just took a shit, got done and went to flush, pulled this lever here and just about ruined myself!”

The bartender say’s “Well no wonder, you’re sitting on the mop pail!”

Today, I sit here transcribing tales from Grandpa that he has recorded onto an old fashioned "Cassette Tape Recorder"! Yes, I know, very dated technology, but almost the only thing he is willing to learn about. He is after all approaching 90, so I think I will go easy on him.

Two Nuns are walking down the street with a big bunch of groceries in their hands. It looked like it was going to rain, then started to Thunder and Lightning. They really started stepping it off so they wouldn’t get caught in it. They went passed a Barber Shop, and one of them say’s “I think I smell hair burning” to which the other replies “Do you think we are walking too fast?”

So, two weeks ago there were six of us to do the work, today it is just me. I am buried, and going deeper by the moment! Five people laid off, and a work load that did not change. Hmmmmmm. I am glad to have a job, but screaming to get it done!!

Anyway, at the moment I about freaked out today, I thought about how others must be feeling. I wondered if they were in my same boat. So, I grabbed my phone, and at a spare moment here or there, I texted the following to people I thought needed to hear it.

"If the day gets you down, remember that I love you very much and think you are wonderful and amazing"

So to you, my faithful readers I say, If the day gets you down, remember that I love you very much and think you are wonderful and amazing.

We all gathered to mark the milestone of Hubby's 60th Birthday last night. As you can see, he needed some help with the candles! And he got it. That's "Munchkin" and she got Hubby a big balloon of Dora the Explorer. Of course, we are far to busy to care for Dora, so Munchkin agreed to take Dora home with her and be her friend. So, Grandma and Grandpa took Munchkin home to go to bed, and of course had to buckle Dora into the seatbelt for safety! Looks like Hubby left Dora in very capable hands!!

And so August is over, all the Birthdays, our anniversary, and the BBQ's are at an end. It has been a fun month, but an exhausting one. And now on to September, and getting back to the blog!

Stella Awards

It's time again for the annual 'Stella Awards'! For those unfamiliar with these
awards, they are named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot
coffee on herself and successfully sued the McDonald's in New Mexico , where
she purchased coffee. You remember, she took the lid off the coffee and put it

between her knees while she was driving. Who would ever think one could get

burned doing that, right? That's right; these are awards for the most outlandish

lawsuits and verdicts in the U.S. You know, the kinds of cases that make you

scratch your head. So keep your head scratcher handy.

Here are the Stellas for the past year:

* SEVENTH PLACE *

Kathleen Robertson of Austin , Texas was awarded $80,000 by a jury of her peers

after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture
store. The store owners were understandably surprised by the verdict, considering

the running toddler was her own son.

Start scratching!

* SIXTH PLACE *

Carl Truman, 19, of Los Angeles , California won $74,000 plus medical expenses when

his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. Truman apparently didn't notice
there was someone at the wheel of the car when he was trying to steal his neighbor's hubcaps.

* FIFTH PLACE *

Terrence Dickson, of Bristol , Pennsylvania , who was leaving a house he had just burglarized

by way of the garage. Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage door opener malfunctioned

and he could not get the garage door to open. Worse, he couldn't re-enter the house because the door
connecting the garage to the house locked when Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for eight,

count 'em, EIGHT days and survive on a case of Pepsi and a large bag of dry dog food, he sued the

homeowner's insurance company claiming undue mental Anguish. Amazingly, the jury said the
insurance company must pay Dickson $500,000 for his anguish. We should all have this kind of anguish.

Jerry Williams, of Little Rock , Arkansas , garnered 4th Place in the Stella's when he was awarded
$14,500 plus medical expenses after being bitten on the butt by his next door neighbor's beagle - even

though the beagle was on a chain in its owner's fenced yard. Williams did not get as much as he asked
for because the jury believed the beagle might have been provoked at the time of the butt bite because

Williams had climbed over the fence into the yard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun.

Pick a new spot to scratch, you're getting a bald spot..

* THIRD PLACE *

Amber Carson of Lancaster , Pennsylvania because a jury ordered a Philadelphia restaurant to pay
her $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her tailbone. The reason the soft

drink was on the floor: Ms. Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an
argument. Whatever happened to people being responsible for their own actions?

Only two more so ease up on the scratching....

*SECOND PLACE*

Kara Walton, of Claymont , Delaware sued the owner of a night club in a nearby city
because she fell from the bathroom window to the floor, knocking out her two front teeth.
Even though Ms. Walton was trying to sneak through the ladies room window to avoid paying

the $3.50 cover charge, the jury said the night club had to pay her $12,000....oh, yeah, plus dental
expenses. Go figure.

* FIRST PLACE *

This year's runaway First Place Stella Award winner was: Mrs. Merv Grazinski, of Oklahoma
City, Oklahoma , who purchased new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On her first trip home, from

an OU football game, having driven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly

left the driver's seat to go to the back of the Winnebago to make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly,

the motor home left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Also not surprisingly, Mrs. Grazinski sued
Winnebago for not putting in the owner's manual that she couldn't actually leave the driver's seat while

the cruise control was set. The Oklahoma jury awarded her, are you sitting down?

$1,750,000 PLUS a new motor home. Winnebago actually changed their manuals as a result of
this suit, just in case Mrs. Grazinski has any relatives who might also buy a motor home.

Are we, as a society, getting more stupid....

or are more members of Congress serving on juries these days?

While enjoying the waterfall (and ignoring the heat) today I was happy to see the moss is recovering nicely from the days of 106 degree temps!

Above the waterfall, the stream that leads to it is looking well too. The moss and ground cover there is looking quite happy!

And to top it all off, the Lilly Pads have sent up a little color of their own! Our first this year! We usually have had several red and pink flowers, but with the strange weather patterns we have not been blessed with any. Instead, our tropical lilly, which truly loves heat, kicked out a perfect starburst! Just look at that bad boy! Perfection!

Gotcha! I was telling the truth though! This giant Cock was on the way to Ely! Now that is what I call a big one!!!

While I took the Chicken photo above, a truck drove by an lost it's couch. Just like that, right when I was taking the picture. Lil Deb and I dragged the furniture off the street to be nice of course, and gave the Chicken something to rest on at the same time....

After Duluth, we headed to Hubbies Aunts house. We saw a wolf along the road, it was very spiritual.

We made it to Ely, got a room at the Lodge, did laundry, had a huge supper and went to read and relax. The next day Hubbies Aunt put out a big spread for lunch, just after we ate breakfast. But you know how it is, food is our friend!!!

Anyway, here are some pix of the road side attractions we found.....

Above is the "Road Kill Vulture" that we drove by. We had to turn around and get a pix. Kind of icky, I know.....

This power switch sits along the road, for what reason I don't know. I made up a story about how it turns on the G-flux generator for the Back to the Future car, but Lil Deb did not believe me. Darn!
